It is important to give a puppy lots\u00a0of experiences with people, places and things. \u00a0Good\u00a0experiences and challenging experiences, both help animals build confidence in their ability to\u00a0handle different environments successfully.<\/p>\n<p>My vet was quick to say that a dog that has experienced trauma can\u00a0develop a phobia, and traumas can include situations that are confusing or\u00a0create stress for the pet.\u00a0 A good<br \/>\nexample is\u00a0vacuuming: to a dog, it\u00a0must seem there is absolutely no point in the noise-making machine that moves\u00a0randomly and quickly.\u00a0 To a sensitive animal, this\u00a0could create confusion, stress and fear.<\/p>\n<p>I consulted my\u00a0trainer to find out how to help a pet live with their fears. His advice was to create positive emotions with the phobia trigger.\u00a0Offer them their favorite treat as\u00a0they approach the object of their fear. Then\u00a0as the pet becomes comfortable by being near the object of their fear, you can\u00a0move them closer to actually experiencing the fear.
